Joel-blueshirt Common Energy Myth:  "It's the Thought That Counts"
 
 
Have you ever said, "Yeah but honey, it's the thought that counts?" when you were trying to justify that fact that you were unable to make your loved one happy with a gift?
 
The highest form of energy is love.  Not to sound cheesy or woo-woo.  There is not a single person on this planet that would prefer NOT have love in his or her life.  According to Vietnamese peace activist and Zen master Thich Naht Hanh, one of the four main aspects of love is the intention and capacity to bring joy.  Both the intention AND capacity are necessary to bring joy.
 
If you have the intention but not the capacity, you will make the other person suffer.  You will give a gift that does not make the other person happy, or you might not follow through with the joy-giving intention.  In the aftermath of this event, the lack of capacity to give joy is justified by the belief, "It's the thought that counts."  Well, not really.  The other person is still not happy, even though you may feel better. 
 
If your loved one has not been happy for a long time, how do you create the capacity to make her happy?  You must listen to your loved one.  Take the time to listen to her deeply.  What makes her truly happy?  Are you sure? 
 
If you think certain things make your loved one happy, but you have not truly listened to him, then you might make a mistake and give him the wrong gift.  You might give him something that would likely make you happy instead of him.  And over time, your loved one will not be happy.  When you truly love him, you will restore your intention to bring him joy, and listen deeply to restore your capacity to bring him joy.
 
Then love can be given to him or her and received by you, because when we bring genuine joy to others, we bring joy to ourselves.  Then you will experience the greatest forms of energy possible: love and happiness.
